Daylilies are amazing flowers. They produce beautiful blooms–from bright reds and oranges to delicate peach and lemon yellow. But each blossom only lasts for one day. The good news is that each morning there are new flowers blooming.
During the month of July, my husband Kelvin goes out early each morning to inspect the daylily beds he’s carefully planted and cultivated over the years. The daylilies are all unique, in many sizes and colors, but each has two sets of three petals.
Daylilies remind me of what Jeremiah said about God’s compassions: “They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:23). These words came in the middle of a very sad book, a lament. In the midst of difficult times, each day brings us new blessings of God’s renewed mercy for us. When the morning sun rises, we have a fresh start to face what comes our way. God is still ever faithful to readily give us the wisdom and strength to face those challenges.
Like the daylilies, we are all unique. We all have different colorful blossoms to bless others with cheerful smiles and words of encouragement. But we must remember that we are given only today to shine out God’s love. Tomorrow is not promised. Before we were even born, God planned the exact number of days we would have on this earth (Psalm 139:16). His plans are to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). He also knows how to keep us on track. David wrote in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
So look at each new day as a gift from God to reflect His grace, beauty, and faithfulness. Like the daylilies.
Wonderful words of life. I so love daylilies too and so I can relate to seeing the new blossoms each day. We all need the freshness of the Holy Spirit to infuse each of us every day to be the light and salt in this world today. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Jeanne! Yes, how wonderful to have the help of God’s Spirit.
