“God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years’” (Genesis 1:14-15).
On this frigid January morning, the sun was a welcome sight, casting a golden glow on barren branches and mounded snowbanks.
It’s comforting to know we’ll now start to see a little more of the sun, as it gradually rises earlier and sets a minute later each day. I’ve always been fascinated with sun tables. It amazes me to see how meticulously God planned our days to grow first longer, then shorter each year, in exact increments of minutes and even seconds. But the kicker is that it’s the same cycle every year! We plan our calendars in coordination with the solar system God already set in place.
That tells me God is a planner, One who finds details important. He set the earth in motion long before sundials, calendars, datebooks, and iPhones. So as we set up our goals for the New Year, wouldn’t it be a good idea to consult our Master Planner? If He so carefully laid out our days, how much more our lives! He has wonderful things in store of each of us, as He says in Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you…to give you a hope and a future.’”
“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).
