“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27).
Long Lake, NY—Lake Eaton was tranquil that morning—hardly a ripple, clear, peaceful. Across the lake stood Owl’s Head—a rounded, pine-covered mountain reflected along with clouds in the still waters. It struck me how silent and still it stood, no signs of any movement. I thought of how that mountain had been there for centuries, just like this, immovable. It made no sound—it didn’t have to. Its sheer size was a commanding presence for miles around, a majestic king in a regal forested robe.
I thought of God’s presence in our lives, sometimes silent, yet a definite strength, always there for us. I picked up my daily Bible reading, that day from Psalm 93: “The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty, armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Your throne was established long ago.” The very thoughts that went through my mind as I viewed this mountain had already been recorded by the Psalmist. Looking at nature leads us to think of God. It bears witness to the words of God hidden in our hearts from years of reading His word.
That immovable mountain was made long ago by an even greater force—the power of the Creator of our universe. We can depend on Him to be a rock-solid Presence in our lives. Even better, we know that He loves us more than anyone else could.
God, my immovable mountain, I can always count on You.
