“The birds of the air… sing among the branches” (Ps. 104:12).
It’s the sweetest sound! As I sit at my desk this morning, I’m listening to the music of a song sparrow in a tree just outside my window. “Tur tur twee dee dee!” he sings. Thin and high-pitched, it’s one of my favorite bird songs because it is so pristine, bright, and cheerful. It makes me feel refreshed, and brings a smile to my face.
I realize, as I listen, that this sweet sound is a gift to me directly from God. No human had anything to do with the creation of my feathered friend. Why did God put this unique little bird right outside my window? God could have made all birdsongs the same—a dreary “squawk” or no song at all. He could have put them all in the deep woods. But He didn’t. I think God knew the joy this special bird would bring to me, how it would encourage me.
What does this birdsong tell me about its Creator? In it I hear God’s gentle sweetness, the music of praise. I see the Lover of little surprises, the encourager of common people on an ordinary day.
Song sparrows have a variety of different calls. My bird, however, seems to be repeating the same short call over and over this morning. I like to think that God wants to remind me over and over, “I love you, I love you.”
Thank you, God, for the gift of this little bird.
