“Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them (Ps 111:2).
Some things in nature just make you smile: a chicken with feathered feet, penguins skidding across ice on their tummies, a tiny chipmunk with straight-up tail sprinting across the patio. Who can’t help but chuckle at a pair of playful puppies tumbling over each other, a baby elephant splashing in water like a child, or young goats bouncing as if they had springs on their feet? Why do these things bring us enjoyment?
As God formed His creatures, He must have thought of the delight and laughter they would bring us. The joy that we experience comes from Him. That tells me He is a God of joy and laughter. Why would He create beings who laugh if He did not laugh Himself?
I remember strolling through a pet store one day, gazing at the color combinations in the fish. I thought, “God, You sure are creative!” Immediately, I was sure I sensed from somewhere a peal of laughter. I think God was pleased that I delighted in His work.
If the fruits of the Spirit include joy, shouldn’t we laugh more? I believe God does. Psalm 43:4 describes God as “my joy and my delight.” If we delight in someone, we love being with him or her and having fun together. Enjoying God’s amazing array of cute and funny animals is a way of connecting with Him and sensing His laughter.
“A cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).
