“Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow” (Ps. 51:7).
I love looking out my study windows today. The falling snowflakes are blanketing everything with fresh, white snow. The pines look sugar coated, and tree branches are dressed in white. Yes, I admit it—I am a “Snow Lover,” and I’ll tell you why. Snow is so beautiful! Its pristine white is a refreshing change from the drab dress of winter. Instead of looking at brown grass, mud, and dead leaves, I would rather see the ground covered in fresh mounds of white. Out here in the country, snow is so clean that you could melt it for drinking water. And what child doesn’t love to grab a mitten-full just to eat!
The cleanness and purity of snow is an image God uses to describe the end result of His cleansing our lives from the impurities of sin. Each of our shortcomings—whether unkindness, greed, or lack of compassion—leaves a dark smudge on our spirit that we can never wash away by ourselves. Sin blocks our relationship with God. Only by accepting Christ’s sacrifice in shedding His blood in our place, can we have our slate wiped totally clean. God tells us in Isaiah 1:18—“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
As a field of new-fallen snow displays only pure whiteness, so our lives can be free from any blemishes that would taint our friendship with our Heavenly Father.
There is nothing whiter than snow, and nothing cleaner than God’s forgiveness.
