“Give thanks to the Lord, who by His understanding made the heavens… the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever” (Ps. 136:1,5,9).
I remember riding home one wintry night, gazing out over fields of silent blue snow, glittering in the moonlight. High in the sky above rode a silvery full moon, accompanied by bright stars in their facing corner of the night sky. Such a lovely sight! In my journal that night I wrote, “Moonlit night, pale blue quiet. Snow-covered fields lie in silent wonder at evening turned day-bright. High above, the moon reigns with unconcealed smile, content with her magic.”
As I gaze up at the moon, I can’t help but feel awe and amazement. I think of people around the world contemplating this same moon, feeling the same wonderment. Earthly troubles pale and subside in comparison to this regal ball of light ruling the night. Its brightness casts tree shadows across the ground, almost as if it were daytime.
God hung the moon as a nightlight to brighten our darkest hours. I am calmed by this reminder that He cares about me, that He still rules the universe. No matter what we are going through, God lets us know in special ways that He is always there for us. When we take our eyes off our anxieties and look to His understanding and love, we are engulfed by a sense of peace, much like the calm of moonlight.
Lord, let me see Your light shining, even in the darkest moments of my life.
