“He gave the sea its boundary, so the waters would not overstep His command” (Proverbs 8:29).
Gasparilla Island, Florida—Walking along the shore in the salty air this morning, I watched translucent aqua-green waves roll in, curl, and collapse in frothy spray as they crashed in the shallows. They raced up onto the beach, fanning out across the smooth sand. Foaming suds lunged at my feet with an effervescent fizz. Then, racing backwards down the beach, dragging small shells, they collided with incoming waves.
It appeared to be high tide, judging by the waves washing closer to dried seaweed above the beach. But I couldn’t tell for sure, being an inlander. The waves knew their boundaries, never exceeding their limits, as if guided by an unseen hand. Who but God could coordinate the effects of the moon, sun, currents, and coastline to produce tides so regular that you can chart them months ahead.
As I looked out over the wide expanse of water, stretching far beyond what my eyes could see, I thought of the power needed to keep this mammoth water giant under control. Holding back these wild waters could never be managed by anyone less than the Supreme Creator of the universe. I was in awe of the beauty of His creation, and the genius of His design.
His power keeps the oceans of the world in check with clockwork faithfulness as tides roll in and out day after returning day.
God, just as You maintain ocean boundaries, You faithfully take care of me daily.
