“He sustains all things by His powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3).
Spring unfolds before my eyes as I see tree branches shedding their reddish buds and, in their place, tiny green leaves forming. Yellow forsythia bushes have burst into clouds of eye-popping yellow-gold. On my kitchen table, the tightly-closed greenish hyacinth buds decided to show their true colors and sprang out in delicate pinks for Easter morning.
Here in the northern U.S. we are seeing spring awakening from a long winter of bare branches and sleeping earth. What is the reason that all these plants happen to waken at the same time? It is because God created a world of living things that perpetuate on a continuing cycle. He is the sustaining force behind their rejuvenation. The Bible tells us that “in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). Without His ongoing living power, all would die, decay, and decompose into dust.
When we notice spring flowers peeking out of their winter beds, we are gazing on the unseen creative hand of God in action. It tells us once again that He is bringing things back to life. This is an affirmation of the Easter story, when God demonstrated His reviving power in a glorious way: He brought Jesus back from the dead! Not only that, but God also promises life eternal to all of us who believe that Christ died for our sins to give us a home in heaven with Him.
Lord, bulbs coming back to bloom remind me of Your gift of resurrection for all who trust in You.
